About Department

The Department of Civil Engineering was one of the three branches started when BMS College of Engineering was established in 1946. In the past seven decades, the department has seen a lot of progress in academics, research and consultancy. In the year 2008, the UG program was accorded academic autonomy status by VTU which enabled us to have our own curriculum to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes in students. The department boasts of three PG courses namely Construction Technology, Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering and Management. In addition, the department is recognized as a research center by VTU and as a QIP center by MHRD, which has changed the status of the department from primarily UG department to the research-based learning center. So far about 28 candidates have acquired a Ph.D. from our research center and more than 65 are pursuing Ph.D. and MSc (Engg.). All this was achievable due to dedicated teaching and non-teaching faculty and the support from the generous management. We have 41 faculty members both from UG & PG, of which 29 have acquired the highest qualification in the form of Ph.D. Our infrastructure has been state-of-the-art for which we thank several funding agencies apart from the World Bank funded TEQIP and the ever encouraging management. Quality of students and their achievements in curricular and co-curricular activities have branded our department as a leading center of learning, not only in India but also abroad. Structural Mechanics Laboratory

Structural Mechanics laboratory covers a range of highly precise and reliable techniques that measure and determine material characteristics and mechanical properties. Department of Aerospace engineering provides a dedicated, state-of-the-art materials testing laboratory at the Structural Mechanics lab. Destructive testing methods are used in this lab to determine the characteristics and properties of materials. This material testing lab is fully equipped to test and analyze Metals, Alloys and composites for a wide-range of applications. Material testing or destructive testing is often required to ensure that products and their component parts can perform for their intended use and endure for their expected life. Mechanical testing measures the strength and ductility of materials under various conditions, such as tension, compression and load. Fluid mechanics laboratory

Fluid Mechanics is one of the fundamental courses of Aerospace Engineering, which dedicatedly deals with the understanding of fluid behavior under real flow conditions. Besides, Fluid Mechanics also forms the basic pre-requisite for Aerodynamics, Gas Dynamics, Aerospace Propulsion etc. which forms the core part of Aerospace Engineering Program. This lab provides a platform for obtaining measurements of various flow properties such as density, specific gravity, pressure, velocity etc. Also, the basic governing laws of Fluid Mechanics are verified with suitable experimental set-ups like the orifice meters, Venturimeter, flow through pipes and Buoyancy measurements. Finally, students get an exposure to assess the performance of air blowers, compressors and hydraulic turbines.

Thermodynamics Laboratory

Thermodynamics is one of the fundamental courses in Aerospace Engineering, which deals with understanding the energy conversion and also covers the basic principles which are required for Gas Dynamics and Aerospace Propulsion. This lab provides a platform for measuring various parameters of heat and energy. To present a wealth of real-world engineering examples to give students a feel for how thermodynamics is applied in engineering practice. To develop an intuitive understanding of thermodynamics by emphasizing the physics and physical arguments. Aerodynamics Laboratory

Aerodynamics is a direct off-shoot of Fluid Dynamics, which deals with the effect of fluids under motion and their aerodynamic effect on the bodies in the path of its motion. Primary agenda of studying Aerodynamics involves the investigation and evaluation of the effect of aerodynamics forces due to the relative motion between the air and the body under consideration. Wind Tunnels being an integral and inseparable entity of Aerodynamics is one of the common facility used to visualize and evaluate the Aerodynamics forces acting on a body of interest. Here, at RVCE, the Aerodynamics laboratory is equipped with a Low Speed Subsonic Wind Tunnel, exhibiting a maximum free stream velocity of 30m/s. The tunnel is used to determine the Aerodynamics forces on models viz. Airfoils, Cylinder, Sphere, Aircraft models etc. Besides, the tunnel is also equipped with a Smoke Wire Technique for aiding flow visualization studies on various models of interest. Further, the availability of six component force balance enables the three dimensional forces on an aerodynamic body at different flow conditions. Lift measurement, Drag measurement, Boundary Layer measurements, Wake measurements are some of the measurement studies presently performed in the wind tunnel. Finally, the Department of Aerospace Engineering is currently in the process of establishing the state-of-the-art Subsonic Wind Tunnel with a maximum wind velocity of 80m/s and will be made available by July 2018. About Department

The Department of Civil Engineering was one of the three branches started when BMS College of Engineering was established in 1946. In the past seven decades, the department has seen a lot of progress in academics, research and consultancy. In the year 2008, the UG program was accorded academic autonomy status by VTU which enabled us to have our own curriculum to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes in students. The department boasts of three PG courses namely Construction Technology, Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering and Management. In addition, the department is recognized as a research center by VTU and as a QIP center by MHRD, which has changed the status of the department from primarily UG department to the research-based learning center. So far about 28 candidates have acquired a Ph.D. from our research center and more than 65 are pursuing Ph.D. and MSc (Engg.). All this was achievable due to dedicated teaching and non-teaching faculty and the support from the generous management. We have 41 faculty members both from UG & PG, of which 29 have acquired the highest qualification in the form of Ph.D. Our infrastructure has been state-of-the-art for which we thank several funding agencies apart from the World Bank funded TEQIP and the ever encouraging management. Quality of students and their achievements in curricular and co-curricular activities have branded our department as a leading center of learning, not only in India but also abroad. In the year 2014, the National Board of Accreditation, India has given us Six years of accreditation under Tier-I (Washington Accord) recognizing our academic accomplishments. About Department

The Department Mechanical Engineering was one of the three branches started when BMS college of Engineering was established in 1946. In the past seven decades, the department has seen lot of progress in academics, research and consultancy activities. The department offers Three PG courses namely M.Tech in Machine Design, Manufacturing Science & Engineering and Thermal Engineering. The UG and two PG programs are granted academic autonomy by VTU in the year 2008 and 2016 respectively, which enabled to have our own curriculum to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes in students. The UG program is accredited for 5 years by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), India under Tier-I (According to Washington Accord) w.e.f. 01.01.2014. Among three, two of the PG programs are accredited, Machine Design for 5 years by NBA during 2018, Manufacturing Science for 3 years by NBA during 2019 and Thermal Engineering is a new PG program. In addition, the Department is recognized as a Research Center by VTU, QIP center by MHRD and also recognized as NDF Centre (only two institutions in Karnataka are recognized as NDF centers ) which has upgraded the Department to a research based learning centre. There has been wide spectrum of research activity in the last few years leading to more than 30 research publications in reputed journals annually. So far 23 candidates have completed their Ph.D. in the Research center and currently more than 45 candidates are pursuing Ph.D. and M.Sc (Engg.) in Research. All these have been accomplished due to the dedicated faculty, non-teaching staff and the support from the generous management. Department has highly qualified 54 faculty members. Out of 54, 36 faculty members have acquired Ph.D. from reputed universities of India and abroad.
